How to Easily Repair Corrupted Files in Excel
You may often come across this problem where you are trying to reopen an Excel file you had previously worked on but find that the file is corrupted. Of course, Microsoft Excel does have a useful utility of automatic recovery through which the software will try to reopen a corrupted file and repair the file at the same time. It will make the changes necessary to fix the file and then even identify what it has changed. In fact, even if Excel fails to actually repair the corrupted file, it will still try to reopen the file but this time around, it will extract all the cell values and formulas leaving just the data in the file. In some extreme circumstances, Excel may not be able to carry out an Excel repair automatically and you may need to recover the file manually.
If you need to repair corrupted Excel files manually, you need to proceed as follows '
- Begin by going to the main 'File' menu and clicking on 'Open'.
- Next, in the dialog box that pops up, select the file that you would like fixing and click on the arrow that appears next to 'Open'.
- Once you have chosen the file that you would like repaired, just click on 'Open and Repair'. You can also specify the method that you would like to use to repair the file.
Occasionally, both the auto recovery methods and the manual recovery methods fail in fixing the corrupted file. You may then need to use software such as Advanced Excel Repair to carry out a quick Excel repair.
Other than the options discussed above to repair a corrupted Excel file, there are other methods that you could use to at least recover your important data from a damaged Excel file. Sometimes, network errors or hard disk errors result in a file getting damaged and make it impossible for Excel to reopen the file. You could move your file to a different network location or to a different hard disk before you try fixing it manually. If every other method fails, third-party software solution, like Advanced Excel Repair, will help you recover the data.
